Sustainability has always been a big part of what we do here at Sopha and is an increasingly important factor for many of our customers when choosing the right sustainable sofas for their homes. Sopha is a family-run independent shop that specialises in handmade beds, sofas, and home stuff where we’re learning what it means to be a sustainable furniture retailer. The environmental impact of plastic waste on our oceans and planet cannot be ignored. Up to 10 million tonnes of plastic waste enter the ocean from coastal communities each year, forming huge patches of waste and endangering countless species and habitats. At Sopha, we are proud to support a sustainable and ethical solution by introducting modern, sustainable technologies such as Quallofil® Blue in our sofas.
Plastic pollution impacts sea turtles, whales, seabirds, fish, coral reefs, and countless other species and habitats. If we don’t take action now, there will be more plastic than fish in the sea by 2050.
Quallofil® Blue is a revolutionary new polyester fibre made using 50% recycled plastic from Plastic Bank, a global leader in stopping ocean plastic. This solution helps to prevent plastic waste from entering rivers and oceans in regions that do not have efficient and formal waste or recycling systems.
The plastic waste used in Quallofil Blue is collected, washed, crushed, and dried, becoming strictly controlled PET flakes. This is used by ADVANSA, the manufacturer of Quallofil Blue, in a 50% blend as a valuable raw material in the manufacture of polyester filling fibres. In addition, ADVANSA fibres are GRS (Global Recycled Standard) independently certified and audited for traceability, ensuring a high standard of sustainability and quality. Quallofil® Blue cushions are not only sustainable but also long-lasting. The high technology filling fibres are scientifically developed to give firm, controlled support and maintain their original appearance over time.
