Sopha invests in Somerset

We work hard at Sopha to support our local economy.

Sopha is passionate about supporting Somerset’s economy so much so that we have employed a large number of local people, engaged in local training and have supported the local supply chain. Sopha is an exciting new furniture store founded by a Somerset based husband-and-wife team Matt and Emily Scott whose aim was to create a destination store of which Somerset could be proud of.

Before Sopha was created a building had to be found that suited the requirements for a 21st century showroom and they fell in love with The George Hotel in Highbridge with it’s quirkiness lending itself to create beautiful furniture displays. It took over two years to renovate and convert it into the modern retail destination it is today with the support of over 15 local businesses including Burnham Waste who took away the many tons of rubbish and rubble from the renovation, David Salisbury who supplied all our stunning timber sash windows (you can read their case study of us on their website) and GBF Masonry Cleaning who did an amazing job removing the render from the front of the building and paintwork on the side to return it back to its original brickwork. As well as building a new furniture store the property has four flats in what were the guest bedrooms and a coffee shop within the furniture store.

Sopha currently employs 11 people; one of whom, Kevin, is a retained firefighter for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Services and another, Emma, is a member of the Ladies team at Huntspill and District Cricket Club. We show our support to both of these Somerset initiatives for what they do in the community. Sopha have signed up to a three year sponsorship of the Ladies team’s cricket kit.

Sopha has made extensive involvements in community engagements especially joining the many Chamber’s of Trade and Commerce and local councils. We work very closely with Highbridge Chamber of Commerce as well as the Burnham Chamber of Trade and Commerce where Matt is a member of their executive committee.

We also like to support Somerset Chamber of Commerce and Bridgwater Chamber of Commerce by applying for their Business Awards, which makes Sopha proud to be a business in Somerset as we have received recognition for our achievements by being shortlisted for the 2019 Somerset Business Excellence Awards for ‘New Business of the Year’ and 2020 Sedgemoor Business Awards for ‘Sedgemoor Independent Retailer of the Year,’ both of which we were announced as finalists. Earlier this year we were thrilled to reveal we had been shortlisted for ‘Investing in Somerset’ and ‘Environmental Achievement’ in this year’s Somerset Business Awards in which we became a finalist for the ‘Environmental Achievement’ Award.

Sopha works with Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge Town Council whose schemes we support such as becoming a ‘Plastic Free Champion’ and the ‘Litter Free Coast and Sea’ Business Awards. We have also taken part in their ‘Best Business Christmas Window in Highbridge’ award and won that in our first 2 years. Another council we like to support is Sedgemoor District Council who have provided and funded local training, which Sopha has engaged with, focussing on Digital Marketing Strategies for Retail Businesses. They have invited Matt to join their ‘re-opening the high-street’ task force as a representative of Sopha in Highbridge so as to give advice and approval of safety measures for businesses to open safely during the pandemic. We’re always cheered up by the work of Sedgemoor’s Clean Surroundings team that we recently decided to sponsor one of their flower displays in Burnham-on-Sea to help them fund their work and continue to make our area such a great place to live and work.

We are thrilled to be a business in Somerset as there are lots of great businesses we can support; one of these being The Design Hive, who have created and designed our branding and our e-commerce website. Being another business in Highbridge means we have the same desire to invest our service in Somerset. We also like to support our High Street businesses through our coffee shop by sourcing our fresh food locally with our bread from Maisey’s Bakery in Highbridge.

Sopha also supports local community groups like ‘The Friends of Berrow Beach,’ whose aim is to keep our local beach as litter free as possible, by volunteering to do beach cleans and we joined the nationwide ‘Great British Spring Clean’ in 2019 by cleaning Apex Park, our local wildlife park in Highbridge with other groups and businesses. Before the pandemic Sopha welcomed community groups to the Coffee Shop for example a local member of the coeliac society held gluten-free drop in sessions for local people wanting support with their dietary requirements and we allowed local Councillors to hold their ‘surgery’s’ so as to be a place for local people to express concerns in their community. Sopha held a free community day for its Grand Opening with live music and entertainment plus a craft fair alongside our special opening offers and goodie bags.
